Technology is around us wherever we go and whatever we do. Whether we are sitting at home, studying in college or running some errands we are always carrying some type of digital device. In fact, smart devices, especially in the last few years, have been on the rise and is now considered a trend. In this blog, I will be discussing the evolution of technology and how it affected my use of data and digital data in my daily life.
At a young age, I got introduced to my first technological experience on a console with what used to be the best game at the time, Sega Genesis. After that, my dad brought a PC to the house and got us all attached. This computer was where I was introduced to news articles, messaging (using MSN of course) and even to more intense gaming. The computer was the introduction of digital data into my life.
With the spread of technology, digital data has been more and more abundant. In fact, digital data is any kind of data present on digital platforms that you are exposed to. Digital data is present around us at any time. Whether it is in the form of text messages, news articles, blogs, websites, etc. digital data is always with us wherever we are. Moreover, phones are constantly monitoring our movements and speech and sending data to servers for different reasons. This way, social media and different digital platforms, like Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube would tailor their requested pages and searches based on our way of life and show us, the users, articles that concern our day to day life. All this is done while gathering data and using algorithmic approaches to do so.
With the development of Internet of Things (IoT), any device being launched into the market is considered a smart device and can achieve way more than what it is supposed to do. As an example of that, any new fridge can now detect the type of food and groceries that are missing from the fridge and automatically order them online without the interaction of humans.
For me, digital data is the only type of data I am currently encountering. In fact, for my studies here in AUB, I only use my iPad to take notes in class. I use it to open several documents, download books as well as a tool to interact with the outside world through the different social media platforms. Since I am a computer and communication engineering student, I rely heavily on technology and digital data in general.
For my final year project, my team and I are developing an application that allows students to register attendance through their smartphones where the teacher can see and interact with the results on his/her web application. My team and I are producing digital data to be used for institutional purposes in this case. This, in fact, is an example of how digital data, which is the attendance record of the students that are being stored on the database, is being used in our day to day routine without being aware of it.
In my opinion, the presence and the spread of digital data impacts the world in tremendous ways . Nowadays, just owning a smartphone is exposing me to digital data and allows me to retrieve and store information as needed.
